Relaties, tweedehandsgoederen en kunst: here are the subjects we cover in our Dutch B1.2 course

Just like developing your reading and listening skills is an important part of our B1.1 course, our Dutch B1.2 course continues on improving those skills. When taking this course, you’ll regularly read online articles and listen to podcasts of your choice. You’ll even be introduced to Dutch literature by reading a Dutch novel. 

At the end of this course we’ll check if your Dutch vocabulary is B1 level worthy, which means that you have to know the 5000 most common Dutch words! And what better way to practice your vocabulary than to cover some useful subjects. Relaties, tweedehandsgoederen en kunst (= ‘relationships, second-hand goods, and art’), here’s an overview of some main themes we’ll talk about during the B1.2 course.

Wat vind jij van online dating?

We’ll touch on the subject of relationships by talking and writing about it, answering questions like these about online dating:

  • Waarom zijn datingsites zo populair? (= ‘Why are dating sites so popular?’)
  • Wat zijn de voor- en nadelen  van datingsites? (= ‘What are the upsides and downsides of dating sites?’)
  • Heb je zelf ervaring met datingsites of ken je iemand die er ervaring mee heeft? (= ‘Do you have any experience with online dating or do you know anyone who does?’) 

You’ll interview a Dutch person about his or her relationships with a partner and/or friends and discuss that conversation in class, and you’ll act as a Dutch ‘dating coach’, providing some written advice to someone who has a relationship problem. While on the theme of friendship, you’ll practice applying relative clauses, for example by stating: een vriend is iemand die altijd voor je klaarstaat (= ‘a friend is someone who’s always there for you’).

Just as you practiced your Dutch discussion skills in the B1.1 course, this course will let you have discussions by using the educational game of discussiebingo. It’s bingo meant to help you improve forming arguments with sentences like:

  • Hoe zie jij dat? (= ‘What’s your take on that?’)
  • Dat hangt ervan af. (= ‘That depends.’)
  • Wat is jouw mening daarover? (= ‘What’s your opinion on that?’)
  • Dat is misschien wel zo, maar… (= ‘That might be the case, but…’)

Hoe gaan de Nederlanders met geld om?

Where do people buy second-hand items? In de kringloopwinkel natuurlijk (= ‘in the second-hand store of course’)! You’ll explain what experience you have with buying and selling second-hand. We’ll also bring up related subjects like Koningsdag or King’s Day.

We’ll teach you how to bargain when buying second-hand items. You’ll also learn to express a complaint about the item you just bought. You’ll even get to draw up a (fictional) letter of complaint.

Hoe gaan Nederlanders met geld om (= ‘How do the Dutch manage their money’)? You’ll find out whether there’s a difference between your culture and the Dutch one when it comes to spending money.

Lastly, you’ll practice with describing quantities by using diagrams and graphs. Some useful examples to get you started are:

  • 1 op de 3 (= ‘1 in 3’)
  • 10 procent van de mensen heeft… (= ‘10 percent of people has…’)
  • Een aantal (= ‘A certain amount’)
  • Een dozijn (= ‘A dozen’)
  • Een deel (= ‘A part’)
  • Een keer per week (= ‘Once a week’)
  • Een kwart van… (= ‘A quarter of…’)
  • 9 op/van de 10 hebben… (= ‘9 out of 10 have…’)
  • De meerderheid kan… (= ‘The majority can…’)
  • De meeste studenten  wonen… (= ‘Most students live…’)
  • Dat is best veel, vergeleken met… (= ‘That’s quite a lot, compared to…’)
  • Een maand of 8 (= ‘About 8 months’)
  • 3 keer zo groot als… (= ‘3 times as big as…’)

Wie is jouw favoriete kunstenaar?

During the classes covering the theme of art you’ll give a presentation about the Dutch book you’ve read, you’ll learn all about Rembrandt van Rijn, a Dutch 17th century painter, and together with your fellow students you will visit a museum in Utrecht.

You will also be given an oral assignment on the subject of museums, for which you’ll answer questions like:

  • Wat is het belangrijkste museum in je land of in de stad waar je vandaan komt? (= ‘What is the most important museum of your home city or country?’)
  • Heb je in Nederland wel eens een museum bezocht? Welk museum? = (= ‘Have you ever visited a museum in the Netherlands? Which one?’)
  • Naar welk museum zou je graag willen gaan in Nederland? En welk museum in het buitenland? (= ‘Which Dutch museum would you like to visit? And which foreign one?’)
  • Vind je dat musea gratis zouden moeten zijn? (= ‘Do you think museums should be free to visit?’)

Through some interesting statements, you and your classmates will have a debate about art. For example by discussing whether the government should stop funding art and culture. You’ll also give a presentation about an art piece and will explain what makes it special.
